Using Coaching as a Professional Skill

How has coach training helped you in other professional roles?

To help you acknowledge the value of coach training in other professions, we asked Coach training graduates this question for their best insight. From developing active listening skills to becoming more present with clients, there are several reasons why the skills gained through coach training can help you thrive in any professional role.

Here is how coach training benefited these leaders in other industries:

  • Developed Active Listening Skills
  • Makes Me Think Before I Speak
  • Working With Evidence-Based and Research Lead Approaches
  • Better Understand and Support Employees
  • Enables Me To Influence With Ease
  • Prepared Me for People Leadership
  • Became Present With Clients to Maximize Their Learning

Developed Active Listening Skills

I thought I had a pretty good understanding of how to listen to employees, but it wasn’t until coach training that I realized I had no clue how to actively listen and actually hear what my team was saying. I learned what questions to ask as a follow-up and how to take action immediately to make those changes. And this has made me such a confident team leader!

Personally, I think we all feel we know how to listen, but no one is actually really hearing one another – no one getting at the root of the issue. Coach training has helped me confidently step into a leadership role because I know that I’m able to actively listen to my team and serve their needs.

Makes Me Think Before I Speak

As a Certified Master Coach with the Center for Coaching Certification and an ICF member on track to receive my ACC Credential, I have benefited from the training greatly as a professional actor. While words have always been my specialty (saying them with intention, singing them with feeling, storytelling), communication is such a huge part of coaching.

The way I conduct myself in my theatrical surroundings has changed. I sit back. I listen. I observe the way people speak to each other, and I am tapped into how dialogue flows between leadership (directors, choreographers, music directors and producers) and their casts and crews and production teams. With the mindset that I want to be part of the solution and not part of the problem, when I am in leadership roles I empower. I ask questions instead of telling. When a team member falls, I pick them and ask them to explore options. It’s a fulfilling and powerfully positive headspace to be in, and coach training has helped me stay there.

Working With Evidence-Based and Research Lead Approaches

Having certified coach training and professional accreditation has helped me to secure roles with FTSE 100 companies partially due to the credibility and also due to my confidence that I work with evidence-based solution-focused approaches.

By having a toolkit that has a strong research base attached to it professional organizations are more engaged with working with me as they know I will be providing something above and beyond standard approaches.

Helps Better Understand and Support Employees

Coaching has enabled me to unlock the potential of many of the people that I worked with in my former career. As a recruitment business leader, I used coaching skills to get closer to my staff. To help me to understand their motivations better. And because of these coaching skills, I was able to design incentives and working patterns in order for them to flourish.

Enables Me to Influence With Ease

I’m more curious and able to suspend judgment which is incredibly valuable for building productive working relationships

It allows me to build trust, understand motivations and explore perspectives different from my own. In turn, that’s meant I am able to offer perspectives to others in ways they are more willing to consider and incorporate

Prepared Me for People Leadership

The Google Oxygen project correlated the top skills of managers of high-performing teams. The #1 skill? Coaching. It makes you more self-aware, a better listener and critical thinker, and helps you engage whoever you’re interacting with.

I’ve trained hundreds of managers in coaching skills, and now that I manage a team, I realize how much easier the coach approach makes to support my team members’ engagement, performance, and development.

Became Present with Clients to Maximize Their Learning

Coach training, which for me, is not a one-off thing but becomes part of your life and the way you want to work and live. Back in 2003 after doing my coach training, it helped me in the consulting work and facilitation I was doing with groups of clients. It helped me in being more open, curious, and questioning of their perspective and helped them to open up and go away with clarity on what to do next.

What’s great about coach training is that you can go as deep as you wish and for me, I continue to be open, curious, and part of groups who do the same. I love to serve my clients and being selfless is where the magic happens!
